5th June is World Environment Day.

It’s an annual event celebrated to raise awareness about the importance of protecting the environment and promoting sustainable development.

Significance

The significance of World Environment Day is that it brings attention to important and critical environmental issues that our planet faces. Todays world faces climate change across the globe, deforestation (I have been reading on this since I was young), pollution (who has not seen or faced pollution).

At least, marking the World Environment Day brings attention to such issues to normal people like me who can take some action in our daily lives to help protect the environment. We can start by reducing waste, conserving energy (in so many ways) and use sustainable transportation such as public transport (though I am not sure how feasible and do-able it is for everyone).

The day serves as a reminder that each of us can make a difference in our own small way and contribute to a healthier planet which we can leave for our kids and their future. How many times have we heard this since we were kids. Hope we can take responsibility this time and surely make the changes needed to help the environment.

We can take part in cleanup drives, tree planting initiatives (I love planting trees and have done so many times) or even attend educational workshops (though I would rather educate myself online through similar videos on OTT platforms, but that’s me).

People talk about the environment and sustainability, but would rather drink tea in thermocol cups or single use plastics, leave their lights ON in their house even when not in use, let water run while brushing their teeth, take long showers, never use public transport.

I could be guilty of some of the above indiscretions. But, lets not all be judges and do whatever we can to help the environment. We owe it to ourselves and our children.
